Energise your body first thing in the morning, by awakening the power of the sun, with the Sun Salutation - the secret to beginning the day brimming with energy.

The sun symbolises light and knowledge, and the Sun Salutation (also known as Surya Namaskar) is traditionally completed in the morning, facing the sun as it rises. You can think of it like a dance or ritual to open yourself up to the source of light and wellbeing, giving thanks for life, and respect and acknowledgment to your body.

This flowing sequence, consists of 12 asanas (poses) that we transition through - linking the breath with movement.

Each asana allows us to activate the heat of the Manipura chakra, reaching deep into our solar plexus (the area above the naval), awakening and circulating the sun’s healing power to restore your body’s vitality, and nurture a clear, calm and tranquil mind.

You may already find yourself familiar with the Sun Salutation, as it is commonly used to warm up the body at the beginning of yoga classes, since it is a very well-rounded sequence.

With the clocks going back, mornings are now brighter and the sunrise is later, making it more accessible for you to wake up earlier and make the most of the sunlight.

If you are feeling inspired to practice, you don’t have to wait for the sunrise, now is the perfect time to start - and if you would like some guidance - we have a free video available on our OnDemand service, that walks you through the Sun Salutation;

You may like to try dedicating each round to one thing you are grateful for, no matter how small or big and soon after, you will feel the uplift in your mood and spirit!

Take the time to move slowly, with purpose and enjoy the journey!
