Change of Season

As the days get cooler and a little more crisp, the darker evenings begin to close in on us and the change of season arrives, it’s that time of year again were we begin to migrate into the comforts of our own homes.

Autumn is the season of transformation and change, nature shows us this so vividly as the leaves gradually change their colour and fall away from the tree.

Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine, focuses on bringing our minds and bodies into balance. According to Ayurveda, each season has a predominate energy dosha. During autumn ‘Vata’ is the most prevalent. Vata is represented by the elements of air and space, the energy of change and movement.

In Balance Vata personalities are energetic, joyful, creative, free in spirit, embrace change and learn easily. Out of Balance Vata can lead to feeling tired or fatigued, anxious and frazzled with a lack of focus andamp; have difficulty falling asleep.

Think of blustery autumn days with the wind whipping up the fallen leaves. Too much vata energy can make us feel unsettled, anxious, scatty, overwhelmed and have difficulty focusing. We can counteract the effects of too much vata energy by working with the opposing energy of the earth element, by bringing grounding practices back into your daily routine. When your mind is swirling around like those autumn winds, an earthy grounding yoga practice can really anchor you down and help you to feel calm and steady.

These are some of my go to grounding rituals during autumns…

  • Eat warming, soothing, and easily digestible meals.
  • Drink warming herbal teas such as ginger and cinnamon teas.
  • Spend time in nature, but keep warm .
  • Do regular yoga, meditation, and pranayama breathing exercises to help ground your energy.
  • In traditional Chinese Medicine Autumn is a time of year for letting go, preparing for the winter and returning to the Earth. A time for rest and containment, deliberate yet natural unwinding.

Namaste,

Natalie
