My first class of Yoga was a true awakening. I left the class feeling lighter, calmer and with a great urge to return. I practiced many times a week for many years, truly enjoying the remarkable changes in my body and mind. This led me to train to be a British Wheel of Yoga Teacher. If I could feel this good maybe I could pass this knowledge on to others!
My style of Yoga is about the feel of the posture, the breath and is never about how we look in the posture, after all, we all have different spines and hips, so it would be illogical for us all to look the same. Therefore, we must listen to our bodies.
You are unique, what works for your body, will be different from what works for others. My classes are about returning to that feel-good feeling, always avoiding injury by listening to the body and focusing on the breath. The body has no option but to open, however you must work slowly and focus to gain maximum flexibility.
"We don’t use the body to get into a posture, we use the posture to get into the body."
As I progressed in my career as a Yoga Teacher, I became aware of the actual health benefits, which led me to further two-year training as a Yoga Therapist CNHC aiding students in the process of healing through Yoga.
Age is no barrier to Yoga, in fact the word “old “is banned in my classes, I know 93-year olds who can touch their toes with ease and 17-year olds who find it impossible. However, touching our toes should not be our goal, far better to be able to move the whole of the body on a regular basis. This is a much better goal to achieve.
Hatha can be challenging or meditative however you feel on that day. Therefore, I offer many modifications to enable you to enjoy the class at your own pace.
Yin Nidra is at the perfect time 19.45 on a Monday evening to prepare you for the oncoming week. This practice will give you the tools to combat the stress that may build throughout the week. The Nidra is preceded by 45 minutes Yin. In general, after this practice you sleep like a baby. All my classes are suitable for beginners and advanced.
The Rise and Shine classes are invigorating and set you up for the day. Yes, 7:15am is a challenging time, but research has shown that early morning Yoga has amazing benefits and will give you an energy boost for the day. Tuesday's Rise and Shine classes are stretching with props, along with Ashtanga Sun Salutations from the A and B series. On Thursdays we Rise and Shine with classic Hatha Flows.
And then there is Yin probably my go-to practice at home, as it is quite delicious holding the postures for 5 minutes working with fascia/connective tissue making the body younger, healthier and stronger.
