Pilates at 100: Exploring The Original Method

with Kathleen Brenner

Description

In 1926, Joseph Pilates opened his first studio in New York City. One hundred years later, his mind-body method is practised around the world, helping people move with greater strength, control and confidence.

The original Contrology mat work consists of 34 exercises performed in one continuous, flowing sequence. Designed to develop complete coordination of mind, body and spirit, the routine emphasises breath, precision, spinal articulation and whole-body movement.

Many of these exercises form the foundation of today's Pilates classes, but they are often modified or taught in isolation. This workshop offers the opportunity to explore the classical repertoire in greater depth, experience some of the less commonly taught exercises, and discover how each movement connects to the next.

Together, we will work towards performing the complete mat sequence in it's original order - challenging ourselves, embracing the process and enjoying the flow of the method.

Whether you are curious about Pilates' roots or looking to deepen your own practice, this is a chance to play, explore, and experience the original method as it enters its second century.

Meet Kathleen

Teacher

Growing up I was in multiple dance classes a week, training for local and national competitions. Fast forward to university; I’d stopped dancing or exercising regularly and found myself completely neglecting my health and fitness.

Thankfully, I found my way back and Pilates played a huge role in helping me regain love and respect for my body. This respect only grew when I studied anatomy and physiology as part of my Pilates teacher training in 2024. I am now hugely passionate about health and wellbeing and am excited to continue furthering my understanding and knowledge.

My classes are mixed ability, with modifications offered to get you working at whatever level you’re at. With regular sessions you will see an increase in strength, mobility, flexibility and confidence!

I look forward to seeing you on the mat.
